Crystal with her uncle, Tom
We are excited to welcome Crystal Brabender to the Wispact Board of Directors. Crystal brings a deep passion for advocating for underserved and marginalized communities, a commitment rooted in her personal experiences and volunteer work throughout her life. Her unique perspective and dedication will be invaluable as Wispact continues its mission to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities.
Crystal’s journey toward advocacy began early, influenced by her close relationship with her uncle Tom, who has Down syndrome. Growing up, her uncle was not just family but a best friend, inspiring her to see the potential in everyone regardless of their abilities. This bond sparked her interest in creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities to participate in activities that might otherwise seem out of reach.
In high school, Crystal volunteered at Three Gaits, assisting individuals with disabilities in therapeutic horseback riding. She also helped with adaptive downhill skiing programs, providing participants with an empowering sense of independence and achievement. These experiences reinforced her desire to ensure everyone, regardless of physical or cognitive challenges, could enjoy enriching activities.
As an adult, Crystal’s focus has expanded to include supporting orphaned and low-income children, promoting women’s access to healthcare in economically disadvantaged countries, and helping relocate refugee families to safe communities in Southern Wisconsin. Her commitment to uplifting marginalized groups aligns perfectly with Wispact’s mission of empowering individuals with disabilities.
Crystal first learned about Wispact through conversations with James Giese, Wispact’s Outreach Director. Meeting him at various conferences over the years gave her a deeper understanding of the organization’s work and impact. These discussions sparked her interest in contributing her time and skills to further Wispact’s mission. Crystal Brabender currently works at the State Bar of Wisconsin as their Advertising Manager.
Looking Ahead
Crystal’s rich background in advocacy, her heartfelt commitment to inclusion, and her extensive experience working with underserved communities make her a perfect addition to the Wispact Board. We are confident she will bring valuable insights and help us continue making a meaningful difference.
